SYNOPSIS / Editorial Review about - Siao Yu |
Celebrated director Sylvia Chang (20:30:40 Twenty Thirty Forty) helms Siao Yu, a cross-cultural drama starring Taiwanese singer-actress Rene Liu Ruo Ying. Siao Yu (Rene Liu) is an illegal immigrant working in a sweatshop in New York City. She enters into a paper marriage with Mario (Daniel J. Travanti of TV's Hill Street Blues) in order to get her green card, while her real boyfriend Gian Wei (Tou Zong Hua) tries for citizenship. Mario's reasons for the arrangement are tired to his gambling debts, and his day job as a writer leaves him struggling to pay the bills. Siao Yu and Mario form an awkward bond based on mutual understanding, but things take a turn for the worse when Mario's traveling lounge-singer wife (Mary Dusay) arrives to find her husband shacked up with someone else. Produced by award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee (The Wedding Banquet), Siao Yu is a rare character drama about a young woman who finds her self-respect through difficult personal times with the most unlikely of people. Rene Liu Ruo Ying was recognized with a Best Actress award at the 1995 Asia-Pacific Film Festival. |
