THREE is an omnibus of Asian mystery tales, inspired by the desire of three film-makers in three very different countries -- Korea, Thailand and Hongkong -- to create an exciting new movie in a proven genre which would appeal to audiences across Asia. Memories (Korea): Sung Min is a married man in his 30s, living in a brand new apartment building that is not yet fully occupied. One day, his wife vanishes.Sung Min suffers some sort of amnesia afterwards; he remembers neither the clothes his wife was wearing nor the reason why she left home on the day of her disappearance. The truth begins to dawn on him when he witnesses a terrible car accident in his neighbourhood. Sung Min is certain that something terrible has happened to his wife, only he doesn't know what it is. On the other hand, Sung Min's wife wakes up and finds herself lying on an empty street. Her condition is far worse than Sung Min's; she has no idea who she is or why she is there. While searching through her own purse, hoping to find some clues, she finds a laundry receipt with a phone number on it. She calls the number on the laundry receipt, but finds no answers. The Wheel (Thailand): Khon and Hun Lakorn Lek are two highly distinct traditional art forms in Thai theatre. The former is considered a low-culture performance involving street dancers and actors, whereas the latter is highly praised as it originated from the 15th century and features elaborate puppetry, and is often considered sacred.Hun Lakorn Lek, despite its profound glory, is on the verge of extinction because of its problematic succession. A successor has to be chosen within the family alone, forbidding any form of apprenticeship involving outsiders. Apart from all serious measures taken by the puppet master to guard his trade, he would also cast a curse on each of his puppets to condemn those who plagiarise the art. Kru Tong is a Khon performer. When he comes across a fantastic casket of Hun Lakorn Lek puppets by accident, he cannot help but think about adopting the trade. Disregarding warnings from his friends and neighbours, Kru Tong starts making puppets on his own, believing that being poor is already the greatest misfortune. .. Going Home (Hongkong): The story begins with the father Kin and son Wai moving into a deserted police dormitory. The neighborhood is rundown, sparsely populated by either the elderly or the absent-minded. Wai finds an abandoned photo studio in the neighbourhood particularly eerie, but not as much as the four-year-old girl and her father, Fai, living next door. Fai is a detached character. Except when shopping for necessities, he stays indoor at all times. His house, always filled with steam, its windows tightly shut, has numerous ventilators running at all hours. Fai has always declared that he lives alone but Kin has spotted him talking to a somewhat paralysed woman inside his apartment... Wai disappears suddenly, and out of desperation, Kin breaks into Fai's apartment. ... |
