La Brassiere

The premise is simple - throw two hot blooded males into the female dominated brassiere design world replete with lissome lingerie models, comely lady executives and more bras than you can fit into a Victoria's Secret catalogue and you have a comedy of titillating proportions (shoot me for the bad pun).
Johnny (a tan Lau Ching Wan ) and ladykiller Wayne (heartthrob Louis Koo , just as tan but buff too) have been selected by a staid Japanese bra company, with a tradition of eschewing male staff, as a new breed of designers, meant to create the ultimate bra by way of their intuitive maleness. Their initial privilege of entry into this rarefied world of eager attractive single female colleagues who fawn and fuss over them, seem like the stuff schoolboy dreams are made of, not to mention their environs of lingerie galore. But the holiday is over when their female boss Samantha (a vivacious Carina Lau ) insists on them pulling their own weight, much to the delight of Lena (a doe-eyed Gigi Leung ) the uppity chief designer and only lady who deflects Wayne's obvious advances. The duo's fruitless first try at bra design are laughable. Derided and dejected, they seek to truly understand the female frontal form and its needs, ending up with the rather corny (not to mention sexist) dictum that female breasts require the support and warmth of being held by caring male hands - which their ultimate design seeks to emulate. Oh, of course the lead pairs of actors fall for each other along the way.
Patrick Leung's rare dabble at comedy elicits much hilarity. The pair's training in brassiere design include purchasing every bra that's out there - a stigma to all the macho guys out there (and perhaps every fetishist's dream come true) - and they ham it up to good effect in the lingerie departments and stalls of Temple Street (with Patrick Tam affectedly playing Ali Bra Bra, a scion of a legendary bra street vending family, in one of many celeb cameos). It is noteworthy that most of the cast manage to wrap their Canto speaking tongues and roll their r's - often anathema to Cantonese speakers (who either drop them or utter them as l's) - in the oft said titular word. Their well meaning female colleagues train them in understanding breasts in a parody of the Kung Fu or gambling ritual schooling sequences of HK filmlore. The results are funnily startling - they end up being able to undress women by sight or rather see through to what types of bras they are sporting - size, cup and all. Such wayward effects are employed rather well with playboy Wayne's drop dead bedroom eyes literally knocking out ladies at sight only to be deflected by Lena's steely gaze and patronizing sigh. Even funnier are the scenes where Johnny and Wayne are cajoled by Lena into donning fake breasts and suffering the inconveniences of keeping them firmly in place whilst performing a myriad of gym exercises. But the highlight of the film belongs to Lau Ching Wan who proves he is just as adept at comedic turns as at heroic action roles, in a mock bondage rape scene to cover up an illicit office affair amidst - you guessed it - a sea of bras.
Other cast members give consistent performances with Louis and Gigi making the cutest onscreen couple. Louis returns to his TVB serial roots in this comedy role, although much in type with his dark wolfish good looks. It is perhaps telling that Gigi, recently touted by popular HK gossip rags as the female celebrity with the flattest chest is cast in this much ado 'bout breasts. Carina is stylish as the lady boss who eventually overcomes her steely reserve to find love. Celeb cameos peppered throughout include Stephen Fung as Lena's former childhood love and Karen Mok as Wayne's old flame.
A light hearted romp that is side splittingly funny and definitely worth a watch!!!
