In the 1950's, the Chinese Red Army invaded Tibet killing more than 1.2 million of the 6 million Tibetans and in the process, destroying more than 10,000 monasteries. Currently there are more Chinese living in Tibet than Tibetans. To avoid the Chinese imposed authority, many Tibetans secretly send their children to other countries with hopes of providing them with a traditional Buddhist education. This movie is about two boys, Palden ($$ID=Jamyang Iodro$$) and Nyima ($$ID=Orgyen Tobgyal$$), escape from Tibet and settle in a Tibetan monastery in exile nestled in the pictureque foothills of the Himalayas. It is here that they receive thier ordination and orientation into monastic life. Palden has a great affection for football (or soccer if you an American) and convinces the abbot to allow them to rent a TV satellite in order to watch the World Cup Finals of 1998 held in France (between France and Brazil). |
