Story: This is $$ID=Michael Hui$'s debut feature for the production company "Hui Brothers" which he formed after leaving "Shaw Brothers". The movie's box-office receipts totalled over HK$6 million, breaking Bruce Lee's previous record and becoming an instant legend! The theme song also broke music chart records. This film is the Hui brothers' indictment of Hong Kong's obsession with gambling and obsession with making it big regardless of the people you may have to trample on the way up. There is no real storyline, the film revolves around the adventures of Samuel and Michael Hui after they leave the jail where they first meet. The film culminates in a David triumphing over Goliath showdown of tricksters, which is calculated to please the "little" people in a dog-eat-dog society. Although "Games People Play" is not a true movie classic, it is a very important movie in the Hong Kong film pantheon, being representative of two facets of Hong Kong people in the 70s. |
