SYNOPSIS / Editorial Review about - Peking Opera Blues
Tsui Hark exploded onto the Hong Kong film scene in 1982 with his ZU WARRIORS. When the American-educated (Texas A&M) film maker started spouting his philosophy of cinema, he dubbed it the 'New Wave' after the revolution in French films of the 1960's. The name stuck, and Tsui formed his Film Workshop productions on the strength of his ZU success. He soon gather a free form 'Stable' 'around him, including directors John Woo and Ching Siu-tong, and actors Brigitte Lin and Chow Yun Fatt . Tsui would be instrumental in the careers of these and others, including Jet Li. He had already attacked the legend film with ZU, and he moved on to historical adventure with PEKING OPERA BLUES.
A greedy singer ( Cherie Chung ) hides her ill-gotten goodies in a cart destined for a Peking Opera troupe whose manager ( Wu Ma ) can't keep his daughter ( Sally Yeh ) off stage. Also headed for the Opera is the secret rebel daughter (Brigit Lin) of the latest General ( Kent Tsang ), where she hopes to make contact with another rebel ( Mark Cheng ). In this melee of shifting alliances and shifting political sands, three women discover a rare friendship.
