Set in an era of extreme Chinese repression by foreign imperialists, $$ID=Bruce Lee$$ plays patriotic hero Chan Chen, who returns to Shanghai to attend the funeral of his kung fu master, the legendary Fok Yuen Kap. His portrayal of the archetypal Chinese fighter - who initially restrains himself in the face of taunting rivals only to culminate in raging violence, is later repeated by Jet Li in the 90's update "Fists Of Legend". In an act of defiance, a Japanese martial arts school sends Chan a commemorative plaque in place of the customary funereal wreath, proclaiming the Chinese to be the "Weaklings of East Asia". An enraged Chan returns the plaque and gives the disciples of the Japanese school a severe beating. Here, Bruce Lee debuts his now legendary prowess with the nunchaku and displays his gravity defying split kicks. Another classic scene sees Chan shattering a sign forbidding the entry of "Both Chinese and Dogs" into a community park. Unexpectedly, Chan discovers that his master's untimely death was orchestrated by the Japanese and seeks revenge. In order not to incriminate his fellow disciples, Chan goes into hiding and mounts stealth attacks on the Japanese, under various "Saint-like" disguises, a testimony to Bruce Lee's acting ability. Unable to confront Chan, the Japanese resort to pressuring his school and the Chinese society, demanding his surrender. An inevitable confrontation follows with yet another engaging fight scene where Bruce Lee is in full form. The culminating freeze frame of Bruce Lee in a flying kick stance echoing his signature hostile shriek, will undoubtedly leave an indelible impression in the minds of all viewers. |
