SYNOPSIS / Editorial Review about - Record of a Tenement Gentleman |
Ozu returns to the downtown milieu of his Kihachi films for this Occupation-set tribute to loving motherhood and the communal spirit. In post-war Japan, a fortune teller has found an abandoned boy in the streets and brings him back to his tenement, but nobody wants to take care of the child for even one night. He thinks that the widowed Otane would be the best person to take care of this homeless boy. However, Otane is reluctant to take care of him. Finally, the boy manages to crack open her hard shells. When the boy runs away in fear of punishment for wetting his bed, she goes on a frantic search. Film scholar David Bordwell once remarked: 'If Ozu had made only this seventy-two minute film, he would have to be considered one of the world's great directors.' |
