Story Outline: "An Autumn Tale" is Chow Yun Fat's follow-up performance on the heels of "&&ID=V1003||Name=A Better Tomorrow&& ['s]" success. And it couldn't be more different - a fine ensemble piece, with no hint of cool or graphic violence, it is instead closer to the heart. Lee Kei ($$ID=Cherie Chung$$) leaves Hong Kong to further her studies in New York in a bid to reunite with her boyfriend, Winston ( $$ID=Danny Chan$$). However, upon arrival she is met by a distant relative, an unkempt drifter, Bow Chik ($$ID=Chow Yuen Fat$$). As she discovers, Winston is involved with another love and has left New York. Forsaken and alone, she succumbs to extreme depression. Bow Chik saves her life during a gas leakage, takes care of her and helps her rebuild confidence. A tale of unspoken love unfolds. Bow Chik, in spite of his obvious affections for Lee Kei feels inferior and is reluctant to express his love. Similarly, Lee Kei, recovering from a failed relationship is hesitant to fall in love again. This subtly touching and melancholy film, with a slight nod to French cinema, has outstanding performances from the leads and is highly recommended. |
